Local donors to make third trip to Mississippi small towns

ARCADIA -- A call for donations from DeSoto Countians to help Hurricane Katrina victims was so successful that two more trips are planned to help devastated Mississippi small towns.

The Rev. Jimmy Collins and the Rev. Steve Griffin from the Arcadia Church of God and business owner Bobby Suggs departed Arcadia Sept. 5 and journeyed to Mississippi. The Rev. Collins said they deliberately chose to aid that state's rural areas because New Orleans and Louisiana are receiving so much focus from FEMA and disaster relief agencies.

"They are devastated," Collins said of the Mississippi residents. "Charley ain't nothing like what happened to them. There are very few houses left." He added, "And they were glad to get it (the donation)." He said some of the hurricane victims had not eaten in three days and that many started eating food items as they were walking away from the donation truck.

Collins said they stayed in Mississippi for two days, going to area churches that are coordinating relief efforts there. He said at that time the small towns they visited had not received any help from FEMA or the Red Cross. The only help they had received by then was a load of water. Those areas were starting to receive more help after he left, Collins added.

When the call went out for items to help the Arcadia Church of God effort, local residents responded overwhelmingly. Collins said the church received so many cash donations, in addition to baby food and hygiene products, that the money was used to buy more of these items for a second trip Tuesday.

But the residents in these small towns are in such dire need that a third trip is planned. Suggs, who owns Bobby Suggs Used Auto, and his son Darrell, who runs Darrell's Road and Wrecker Service, will leave on Thursday morning.

So another call is going out to residents to donate more baby food, hygiene, food and drink products. Collins asked that no clothes or ice be donated. Donations can be dropped off at Bobby Suggs Used Auto or Darrell's Road at 2347 S.W. Highway 17 and Wrecker Service at 663 S. Brevard Ave. in Arcadia. Donations will be accepted until 8 a.m. Thursday. You can reach Bobby Suggs at 494-2165 and Darrell Suggs at 494-5705.

For questions about donating or to arrange a pickup, contact the Rev. Collins at 990-1822.
