07/01/2005 07:37:54 Alert
Many of my customers have tried to replace their own harnesses with varied success. It is almost a certainty that when it comes to fixed tray replacement, that their repair job comes back to be redone.

Advice - first timers, unless you liked you school teacher growing up who made you do it over until you got it right, you might concider finding someone who know's how to do it right the first time. I learned a hard lesson about a week and a half ago (and I supposedly know what I'm doing ;-). The RH front gearbox housing side mount bolts on the winch were broken allowing the motor to pitch up and make it almost impossible to put the winch lines back on. I tried to moved the housing, but it was in such a bind that it wouldn't move. I advised the customer (at 1:30am in the morning on a Sunday night - Monday morning) that he needed to pull the winch at a later date or bring it back for me to do it. He acknowledged and went home. about 8 days later he'd called (from his hour and a half away place of business) and said that my bed harness had ripped out. I drove up to his place and picked it up, brought it back to my place, and tore it down for a failure analysis. I found the gearbox of the winch loose. What had happened was when the winch was put in a hard pull it raised the front side of the housing up and when it came back down, snapped the winch fitting allowing the hose to catch and tear out. Doesn't hind sight suck?
I redid the entire job for nothing, despite the failure being equipment related, I felt I should have advised him to repair it at that point in time (as hind sight now dictates to me).

So PLEASE, make sure you know what you're doing. I did... and it cost me about $1100.00 with parts and labor.

Chris
